Many people think of babies as a gift, and these people are right, but in this case, I don’t know if the mother would share the same opinion.

Being a doctor is amazing but sometimes it’s also a shocking experience.

Let me explain.

A case like any other

I’m working in one of the best hospitals worldwide, and this means that I see a lot of cases every day, especially “weird” and hard cases.

My first rotation of radiology is in the pediatric department, so you can imagine what type of cases I see.

Kids that are being abused, in the ICU, with cancer, sometimes a few “relaxing” cases of appendicitis, and the list goes on and on.

On Thursday it was like any other day, I arrived at the hospital at 7:30 and I started my day by calling all the patients down to get an ultrasound. You see, our day is mostly combined with examining patients who come to the emergency department AND those who are already admitted.

After an hour of examining patients, I see that a 16-year-old girl is getting an abdominal ultrasound because of a suspicious hematoma. As I’m heading to the examining room, I start preparing myself. I think of the way I’ll…
