What are Carl Jung’s Thoughts on Modern People and Social Media?
Yeah, this title is clickbait but I just finished reading The Undiscovered Self by Carl Jung and it’s closer to reality than you think — It’s actually very scary.
Most people, including myself, love learning more about the author of the book they’re reading — since it brings them closer to his or her ideas — so let’s begin our trip by learning more about Carl Jung’s life.
Jung was born on the 26th of July in a very small Swiss village called Kesswil, which is by lake Constance. His family was poor and lacked high education. His father, Paul Jung, who was an impoverished rural pastor, and his mother Emily Preiswerk, who came from a family of churchmen and pastors, played a key role in Jung’s psychological and religious beliefs. His mother, Emily, was an eccentric and depressed spirit seeing mother which affected Carl Jung’s development — turning him into an introverted and lonely child. He was closer to his father.
Even though Jung was underperforming in school he took a great interest in Latin, learning new languages and assimilating philosophical and religious texts. His initial thoughts were to study to become an archaeologist but that soon changed, as he ended up studying medicine at the University of Basel.
